The Philadelphia War Tax Resistance was an outgrowth of A Quaker Action Group, which was an associate member of the War Resisters League and of the Society of Friends. As part of a national movement known as War Tax Resistance, the local group became known as Philadelphia War Tax Resistance/War Resisters League in 1975. The War Resisters League (WRL) was established in 1923 through the initiative of Jessie Wallace Hughan. It began as an organization for men and women willing to sign a pledge refusing to support war of any kind.
